HISTORY OF SAGA

Not many current SAGA members know that SAGA has been around for 33 years, and even fewer know much about how the club was started. Even those of us who were involved in the early years find our memories of the history are rusty. Fortunately, the first five years of the club were documented in a series of newsletter articles in the early 80’s, at a time when the club had grown to 200 members. It seemed fitting to republish these articles for current members, and to update the history of SAGA with what has happened with the club between the first five and last twenty one years. Accordingly, the following articles, from the SAGA SKI CLUB Newsletter of February 1981, describes the first year of the club. It has been edited only to correct a few spelling and typing errors. In upcoming issues we plan to reprint more of these initial five articles and update the history from where these articles left off.

Year 1 - The Beginning

Believe it or not, SAGA Ski Club has been around for over 30 years, yet most current participants know little or nothing about how the club came to be and eventually grew to its current size and importance in our community. This article is the first in a series that will tell the story of SAGA. While not a great classic, it is nevertheless a documentary of an evolving life style. For those of us lucky enough to be involved in the early years, it will bring back memories of a much smaller club. For SAGA’s newer members this examination of the clubs’ roots will hopefully result in a better understanding and respect of the value and frailty of our organization.

Year 2 - The Dry Year

This is the second installment in the History of SAGA. It was written by Ken Slater on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the club, and originally published in the SAGA Ski Club Newsletter in March 1981.
